Airports Heathrow and Gatwick, both competing to be the site of a new runway, have reported record passenger numbers for March.

Gatwick announced record breaking traffic figures announced for March with 2.96 million passengers travelling through the airport – an increase of 9.2 per cent compared to the previous year.

Rival airport Heathrow saw its busiest ever March with a record 5.95 million passengers travelling through the UK’s hub, an increase of 3.4% on March 2014 as the airport benefitted from an earlier Easter travel rush.

Both airports are currently awaiting the outcome of the Airports Commission review of airport capacity in the south east.

The Commission has shortlisted three proposals for the airports:

  • A third runway at Heathrow
  • Extending and existing runway at Heathrow
  • A second runway at Gatwick
